Nope, never read that article before. It definitely sums up everything i had been figuring out myself so far. Again, this is an excellent find.

I spoke to someone on the James Randi forum who said they can induce OBEs at will. They said that sometimes they heard their own name while in those states but of course they are skeptical of all things supernatural. It’s just LOVELY that while most people struggle to try to induce an OBE, this person can do it at will and firmly believes it is nothing special.

Good luck with trying to find info on hearing the voice etc. Most likely will find it in some article dealing with hypnagogia which, unfortunately, appears to be chock full of paranormal stuff.

Yeah, I was very pleased to find that, and wouldn’t even have been Googling for stuff like it if it wasn’t for your initial questions/comments about catalepsy. In fact, when I first read the piece and noticed how similar it was to the mechanisms you were proposing, I thought you might have read it yourself back in the ’90s, and based some of your own ideas on it!

Unfortunately, the ReVision article on Questia doesn’t include the bibliography for all of the author/year references in the text. But, eLibrary Canada carries issues from that (1994) year! (Obviously, you have to be logged in [e.g., with a Toronto Public Library card number and PIN] to access all that. You also have to search only by the title, not including the author. Stupid way of setting up a search, but what can you do?) So I’ve added that info to the Word document (plus a final page of the article which wasn’t included on Questia—turns out they left off right in the middle of a sentence on page 11, while the full article looks to have been 14 pages long).

I’ll definitely keep my eyes open for neurological stuff about hearing voices (esp. one’s own name) in hypnagogia and during sensory deprivation.

Wow. This is amazing information and it confirms everything i had previously guessed. Excellent find Geoff. Lots to dig into here, something to come back to again.

Incidentally, sometimes while i have meditated i have heard my own name as if it was being “spoken” to me or comes from somewhere outside myself somehow. This is a curious phenomenon and it applies to other “voices” one might hear in these states of hypnagogia. I wonder if you can find any info about this? (not that i wouldn’t look myself but you are much better at finding these things).
